2 Corinthians 5:21
“For He hath made Him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him.”
God made Him “Jesus” sin. God treated His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, as if He committed every single sin ever committed by you and by me. Every single sin ever committed by every person who has walked this earth. Though in fact, Jesus committed none of them.
Hanging on the cross, Jesus was a spotless Lamb. He was never for a split second a sinner! He was Holy God on the cross! But God treated Him as if He lived like you and me. As though He lived like every person who has walked this earth. (What a Savior!) God punished Jesus for our sin, the sin of the whole world. Then God turns around and treats you and me as if we lived like His only begotten Son, Jesus. This is the heart of the Gospel.
God provided Jesus, a substitute for His wrath. What we get is complete forgiveness covered by the righteousness of Jesus Christ. When God looks at the cross, He sees you and me. When God looks at you and me, He sees Jesus Christ, His Son.
