(Read Psalm 37)
Psalms 2:2-4 “The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against His anointed, saying, let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us. He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.”
Most leaders of the world are far from God. In fact, I’m not aware of any nation leader who currently professes faith in Jesus Christ as Lord. In the Bible wherever we see that God laughs, it is a precursor to His judgment. When God laughs, it is not funny. During the perilous times we are living in (2 Timothy 3:1), I find Psalm 37 to be a wonderful Psalm to pray and meditate in. It reminds me that the battle belongs to God. He does not want me to fret over evildoers. To fret means to be angry with, worry about, or be jealous of evil doers. God will cut them off like grass, and they will wither away.
In verses 3-5 of Psalm 37, we are instructed to perform three specific acts of obedience.
- Trust– “Trust in the LORD, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed.” God has us at this time and place in history for His purposes. We are not to be overcome of evil, but to overcome evil with good. (Romans 12:21) What is the whole duty of man? To fear God and keep His commandments. (Ecclesiastes 12:13) Our focus should be obedience, and He will take care of our needs.
- Delight- “Delight thyself also in the LORD; and He shall give thee the desires of thine heart.” God wants us to delight in Him. To delight in God means to enjoy Him for who He is: the almighty, holy God, Creator, Savior, and Lord of all. This delight brings about a joy in our obedience to Him. Our heart’s desires will become sanctified and holy. When we long for Him, the things of this world become less desirable.
- Commit- “Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in Him; and He shall bring it to pass.” God wants us to hold true to His commands and carry out the call He has placed upon us. Each new day the Lord gives us, is a new opportunity to commit ourselves to Him. We are responsible to trust and obey. He is responsible for the outcome.
God is just, and justice will be served. We can rest in His promises. We can trust Him. For He alone is trustworthy! Vengeance belongs to God. (Romans 12:19) The wicked may plot against the righteous, but God laughs at their schemes. He sees their end. God breaks the arms of the wicked, they will perish. But God upholds the righteous, and they will receive the inheritance of the Lord forever. The Saints of God must hold true and not be ashamed.
With all the sadness and evil deception happening in this sinful world, it’s easy to get blurred vision, and lose sight of who is really in control. Next time you see the kings of the earth rejecting God, do not fret. Pray and wait on Him. Remember, the meek shall inherit the earth and God is laughing at the wicked.
Psalms 103:19 “The LORD hath prepared His throne in the heavens; and His kingdom ruleth over all.”
