Who Is The REAL Jesus?

In the Ten Commandments, (Exodus 20:1-17) which God has given, there is something I have pondered about commandments one and two.

Exodus 20:3-4 “Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:”

What does God define as a graven image or likeness? I have researched and read many commentaries about these two commandments and all of them have agreed on the fact that we should have no other gods before the one true God. The area I’ve seen interpreted a bit differently is that of having a graven image or likeness of God, crafting a god from our own ideas. — What does this look like?

Jesus warns of false Christs, (Matthew 24:24, Mark 13:22, 1 John 2:18, 4:3, 2 John 1:7) and the Apostle Paul warned about another Jesus. (2 Corinthians 11:4) We each have a view in our mind about who God is, but why do views differ? I think our views can differ because we’re not all getting our view from the same source. 

I’m a 70s baby, and for as long as I can remember I’ve seen many portrayals of Jesus through different mediums. I’ve been influenced by sculptures, pictures, paintings, plays, and movies. Some portrayals have been respectful and line up well with the Scripture. However, after reading the Bible cover to cover multiple times, I can say that most of the portrayals of Jesus which man has made, are not accurate, nor respectful. The problem with every man-made representation is that all of them are someone else’s view of Christ, and not all views get their source from the Word of God. This can lead down a slippery path of deception. True understanding of who God is, begins and ends with His Holy Word. God is Holy, no one is like God. (Isaiah 46:8-10) He has given us a Book to know Him. Beware of the mediums of man which can taint your view of God. Are you being conformed into the image of Jesus, or are you conforming a “Jesus” that looks more like you? (Romans 8:29)

We often will hear that God is love, but we rarely will hear that God is just. Yes, Jesus loves us, He humbled Himself on the cross. He was broken and became the perfect sacrifice for our sins, but it does not end there. (Philippians 2:5-13) He conquered death, rose from the grave, and is the Judge of the nations.
